Jeep Wrangler vs. Jeep Gladiator: Which One Fits Your Life?
The short answer: The Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator share the same Jeep DNA: standard four-wheel drive, solid front and rear axles, removable doors and tops, and the same 285-hp 3.6L V6. The big difference is the back half. The Wrangler is an SUV. It comes as a 2-door or 4-door, it's shorter and easier to park, and it offers more engines, including a 2.0L turbo, a manual transmission and a 470-hp V8. The Gladiator is a pickup. It seats five, adds a 5-foot steel bed, and tows up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped. It's also about 2.5 feet longer than a 4-door Wrangler. If you mostly carry people and park in tight spots, go Wrangler. If you haul, tow or carry dirty gear, go Gladiator.

Both Jeeps are a blast with the top off on a warm Coastal Georgia evening. Picking the right one comes down to how you'll really use it on a Tuesday, not just on a weekend. Here's a side-by-side look.

Size, parking and daily driving
This is where most people decide. Both Jeeps are almost exactly the same width (73.9 inches for the Wrangler and 73.8 inches for the Gladiator, on standard models). Length is a different story:
Wrangler 2-door: 166.8 inches long with a 32.7-foot turning circle. It's the easiest to park, U-turn and squeeze into a tight space.
Wrangler 4-door: 188.4 inches long with a 38.8-foot turning circle. It's still easy to live with in a parking lot or a driveway.
Gladiator: 218.0 inches long with a 44.5- to 44.7-foot turning circle. That's 29.6 inches longer than a 4-door Wrangler, so plan on three-point turns and wide swings into parking spots.
What that means around here: if you live in barracks or on-post housing, park in tight lots, or head into downtown Savannah and its parking garages, the Wrangler is the easier daily driver. If you have a long driveway and room in the garage, the Gladiator's length matters less. Before you buy, measure your garage and compare it with the numbers above.
Seating and passenger room
Wrangler 2-door seats four. Rear legroom is 35.7 inches, so it's best for singles, couples, or a back seat that only sees occasional use.
Wrangler 4-door seats five, with 38.3 inches of rear legroom.
Gladiator also seats five, with the same 38.3 inches of rear legroom.
For a family with kids, the 4-door Wrangler and the Gladiator offer the same rear-seat legroom. The real question is whether your stuff rides inside behind the kids or outside in a bed.
Cargo space vs. a pickup bed
Wrangler 4-door: You get 31.7 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 72.4 cubic feet with it folded. Groceries, strollers, duffel bags and dogs all ride inside the cabin, out of the rain. The 2-door has much less room behind its back seat.
Gladiator: You get a 5-foot steel bed with 35.5 cubic feet of space. It measures 60.3 inches long with the tailgate closed and 81.3 inches with it open, and 44.8 inches wide between the wheel wells. That's great for muddy gear, coolers, mulch, a deer cart or anything you'd rather not have in the cabin. There's very little cargo room behind the Gladiator's rear seat, though, so luggage and groceries go in the bed. Add a bed cover if you want to keep them dry and out of sight. Compare your options in our guide to tonneau cover types, and see exactly what fits in our Jeep Gladiator bed size guide.
Towing and payload
If you tow, the Gladiator is the clear pick.
Configuration | Max towing (when properly equipped) |
|---|---|
Wrangler 2-door | 2,000 lb |
Wrangler 4-door, most configurations | 3,500 lb |
Wrangler 4-door Rubicon, 8-speed automatic with 4.10 axle | 5,000 lb |
Wrangler Moab 392 (V8) | 3,500 lb |
Gladiator Sport or Sport S with tow package, Willys or Mojave | 6,000 lb |
Gladiator Rubicon | 7,000 lb |
Gladiator with the Max Tow Package (4.10 axle) | 7,700 lb |

Payload is the weight of people and cargo you can carry. Stellantis lists 1,088 to 1,562 pounds for the 4-door Wrangler and 1,025 to 1,720 pounds for the Gladiator, depending on configuration. The highest Gladiator number comes with the Max Tow Package. Always check the sticker on the door jamb of the exact Jeep you're looking at, and learn what GVWR means before you load up.
Pulling a boat to the coast, a camper or a utility trailer full of PCS boxes? Find the loaded weight of your trailer first, then pick the Jeep with room to spare. See our guide to Jeep tow package wiring too. One perk goes the other way: a properly equipped Wrangler can be flat-towed behind a motorhome. Here's how Wrangler flat towing works.
Engines, transmissions and fuel economy
Wrangler gives you the most choice:
2.0L turbo I4: 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, 8-speed automatic. EPA-estimated at 21 mpg combined. It runs on 87 octane, and Jeep recommends 91 or higher for best fuel economy and performance.
3.6L Pentastar V6: 285 hp and 260 lb-ft. It comes with an 8-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. EPA-estimated at 19 to 20 mpg combined, depending on body and transmission.
6.4L HEMI V8: 470 hp and 470 lb-ft in the Moab 392 (and the limited-edition Willys 392). EPA-estimated at 14 mpg combined, and it requires premium fuel.
Gladiator keeps it simple: the 3.6L V6 with 285 hp and 260 lb-ft, paired only with the 8-speed automatic. It's EPA-estimated at 19 mpg combined, with a 22-gallon tank.
What about the plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe? Jeep says the Wrangler 4xe is no longer in production. If you want one, ask about our used and certified pre-owned Wranglers.
If you're commuting from Richmond Hill or Savannah to Fort Stewart every day, the mpg gap adds up over time. The Wrangler with the 2.0L turbo is the efficiency pick of the two.
Off-road trims: Rubicon, Mojave, Willys and more
Both Jeeps are built to leave the pavement, and both come standard with four-wheel drive. Here's how the off-road trims compare:
Willys (Wrangler and Gladiator): A good step up for sandy two-tracks and muddy hunting-club roads. On the Gladiator, Willys adds an electronic locking rear differential and mud-terrain tires.
Rubicon (Wrangler and Gladiator): The rock-crawling champ. It has Rock-Trac 4x4 with a 4.0:1 low range, front and rear Tru-Lok electronic locking differentials, an electronic front sway-bar disconnect, and 285/70R17 all-terrain tires. A Wrangler Rubicon has 10.8 inches of ground clearance, and a Gladiator Rubicon has 11.1 inches.
Rubicon X (Wrangler): Adds more equipment on top of the Rubicon.
Mojave (Gladiator only): Jeep's Desert Rated truck. It's built for speed in sand and rough terrain, with FOX 2.5-inch internal-bypass shocks with external reservoirs, a reinforced front suspension, and 11.6 inches of ground clearance. You can't get a Mojave Wrangler.
Moab 392 (Wrangler 4-door only): The 470-hp V8 with 35-inch all-terrain tires, a 4.56 axle ratio and a full-time Selec-Trac transfer case.
Which is better off-road? For tight, technical trails, the Wrangler wins on maneuverability. Its shorter wheelbase and better breakover angle help it clear ridges a long truck might drag over. Jeep rates the Wrangler for crawl ratios up to 100:1. The Gladiator Mojave is the pick for fast runs on sand and washboard roads, and the Gladiator Rubicon brings its lockers and low range to the same trails, just with more truck to place. Wherever you go, stay on approved trails and roads, and never drive through flooded roads. Learn more about how Jeep four-wheel drive works.
What's new for 2027
Jeep has opened orders for both 2027 models. Here are the highlights from Jeep's official announcements:
2027 Wrangler: A 7-inch color instrument cluster is now standard on Sport, Sport S and Willys. Sahara adds a long list of standard features, including blind-spot monitoring, rear park assist, Alpine audio and navigation. Rubicon now gets standard heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and navigation. Engines carry over.
2027 Gladiator: The lineup now starts at Sport S and includes Willys, Sahara, Mojave and Rubicon, plus Altitude and High Altitude models. Rubicon and Mojave add standard heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and navigation. A new limited-production 35-inch Tire Launch Edition brings factory 35-inch tires and a 1-inch lift to Willys, Rubicon and Rubicon X. Towing and payload carry over at up to 7,700 and 1,720 pounds.

You have kids and do a lot of road trips or PCS moves: Go with the Wrangler 4-door. Luggage rides inside, and it can be flat-towed behind an RV when properly equipped.
You fish, hunt, camp or haul gear that's wet, muddy or bulky: Go with the Gladiator. The bed keeps the mess out of the cabin.
You tow a boat, a camper or a trailer over 3,500 pounds: Go with the Gladiator, rated up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped.
You want serious rock-crawling ability: Get a Rubicon, either a Wrangler or a Gladiator.
